Welcome to World Water ONLINE!

Water is fundamental to life on earth. Water information is critical to understanding our world and the way water and people interact. World Water Online is a system for bringing together geospatial and temporal water information for the whole earth at all scales from global to national, regional and local. It describes the characteristics of the landscape through which water flows, and the properties of the water itself. World Water Online aims to link water observations data with models for simulating water movement and quality. All this will be done on the web to make the information universally accessible.

As part of World Water Online, a hydrologic base map of the rivers and streams is being created so that you can zoom in from a global map to a river of interest anywhere on earth. A global watershed delineation service is being developed that will support delineation of the watershed of any point on the river. Observations data on precipitation, streamflow and water level are linked so that the time series of precipitation over the watershed can be connected to the flow and water level at its outlet.

The Center for Research in Water Resources of the University of Texas at Austin has joined with the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) of Redlands, CA, and KISTERS of Aachen, Germany to create the foundation system for World Water Online.

World Water Online will be useful for water resources professionals, as well as governmental agencies, NGOs, and scientists who needs a better understanding of water in their environment. It will also provide guidance (templates, source code, and workflows) that organizations can use to build similar sites with their authoritative data.
